Overview
We'll spend one wonderful week together, exploring the best locations that the Lofoten Islands has to offer for landscape photography. From Arctic beaches at the mouths of fjords to charming fishing villages perched quaintly amidst rugged, snowcapped peaks, winter in Lofoten is absolutely brimming with enchanting sights to be photographed.
In winter, the nights will be relatively long, meaning that there will be many opportunities to hunt for the Northern Lights. Wherever they decide to make a display, we'll head out to the most picturesque locations for amazing foregrounds to include in all of our shots, giving context to this ethereal natural phenomenon.
There will be plenty of time for us to roam across the spectacular seascapes that these islands are known for, where we'll practice our long exposure photography skills and scout for interesting compositions in the atmospheric winter light.
Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival at Leknes
You'll arrive at Leknes airport and have some time to rest or to explore the town at your leisure, before we meet as a group for dinner at 7pm in the evening. Over a hearty meal, we'll discuss the plan for the days ahead. You'll have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and to get to know your fellow travellers a little bit better.
Don't get too comfortable yet though, as we'll be heading out to shoot in the evening if the Northern Lights make a display! As such, we ask that you be ready with your camera gear packed and your batteries charged, should we decide to head out at a moment's notice.

Days 2, 3 - Arctic Beaches
The beaches in the Lofoten Islands are spectacular for seascape photography, with smooth rocks and golden sands meeting the beautiful, turquoise water as it sweeps onto the shore. We'll spend a couple of days exploring these magnificent Arctic beaches, all through the impressive golden hours, from sunrise until sunset.
At Utakleiv, we'll have the chance to traverse the sleek boulders which this beach is known for, hiding a myriad of rockpools in its midst. This coastline makes for a magnificent backdrop should the Northern Lights dance in the night sky.
Situated adjacent to Utakleiv is the quiet beach, Haukland, nestled between mountains as far as the eyes can see with a distinct stretch of ocean in the distance. This was once voted Lofoten's most famous beach and it's not hard to see why.
Meanwhile, at Unstad, we'll witness the incredible swell of the ocean crashing onto the shore. With mountains on either side, it makes for a stunning backdrop, particularly if we are lucky enough to see some surfers in the water!
Last but not least is the bewitching beach of Vareid, where rockpools abound. It's a fascinating place to contemplate, particularly as the sun sets in a blaze upon the horizon.
Luckily for us, these Arctic beaches are all perfect locations for spotting the Northern Lights. It will be easy for us to obtain numerous different compositions should the Aurora light up the sky, as these beaches are within close proximity to one another.
During these days, there will also be the opportunity to photograph the authentic fishing village of Ballstad, as well as to stroll along Skagsanden beach, where intricate patterns often pop up in the sand with the movement of the tides.

Days 4, 5, 6 - Reine
For days four, five and six, we'll make our base in the fishing village of Reine. Located on the island of Moskenesøya, this charming location has had some of its fishing cabins converted into comfortable rorbuer, where guests can stay. We'll all have our own rooms in the rorbu, though we'll share some of the living spaces. It will be a cosy place for us to retreat to at the end of a long day shooting, though the rorbu themselves make for an enchanting subject with a majestic snowcapped mountain as a backdrop.
During the days, we'll head to the extraordinary beaches of Fredvang – a location that is perfect for aerial photography. We'll also spend a bit of time capturing the tranquility at the hamlet of Flakstad, and the amazing views to be found overlooking the fishing village in Nusfjord.
Of course, we'll spend the evenings continuing our search for the Northern Lights. Should they make a display, then we'll be perfectly placed to capture them dancing over the fjords.

Day 7 - Departure
Day seven will mark the end of your adventure in the Lofoten Islands. We'll meet together as a group for breakfast, before checking out of our rorbuer. From there, we'll make our way back to Leknes airport from Reine and fly out of Lofoten together as a group – no doubt with wonderful memories of our photo tour in this magical, winter wonderland.
** Please note: We recommend that you book your flight from Leknes to depart the Lofoten Islands at around 1-2pm.

The tour is always dependent on weather, as the Icelandic weather can indeed be highly unpredictable. Likewise, visits to ice caves are dependent on favorable conditions, and indeed the ice caves themselves are not permanent. When it comes to the Northern Lights, while they are most likely to be seen between September and April, there is no guarantee that they will appear on a given day.
